Protest: UNIBEN shuts down academic activities indefinitely

The authorities of the University of Benin on Thursday shut down academic activities in the institution indefinitely.
The university in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Dr Benedicta Ehanire, attributed the decision to the refusal of the students of to shift grounds on their demands.
Recall that the students on Wednesday took to the streets, blocking the ever-busy Benin-Ore Highway to protest weeks of power outage on campus.
The students, who had two weeks until their first semester examination, said the situation was severely affecting their preparation.
The students also called for a downward review of transport fare by the UNIBEN shuttle service, which was increased with effect from July 1.
In the notice of closure made available to NAN, Ehanire described the students’ demand for 1,125-hour supply of electricity as unrealistic.
“Following the insistence of students of the University of Benin to shift grounds on their demands for twenty four hours supply of electricity and more, considered unrealistic by the University’s Senate, the University has shut down academic activities indefinitely.
“Students are to vacate the hostels immediately while all the relevant units of the University are to take note and comply.
“However, non teaching staff and staff on essential duties are not affected by the shut down,” said the university’s spokesperson.

2025 UTME: JAMB arrests 27 impersonators in Abuja

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has arrested 27 impersonators who attempted to sit for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) on behalf of others.
This was contained in a statement issued to newsmen in Abuja on Friday by the Board’s Spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin.
Addressing a separate incident at Caleb University, Dr Benjamin confirmed that the Board was alerted to the “unauthorised restrictions placed on candidates wearing hijabs.”
He added that swift action was taken following the incident.
“We extend our sincere apologies to the affected candidates and commend the leadership of both the centre and the university for their prompt intervention, which ensured that no candidate suffered undue disadvantage,” JAMB stated.
The Vice-Chancellor of Caleb University was said to have condemned the actions of an “overzealous security officer” responsible for the unauthorised restriction.
The examination board recently launched decoy websites designed to trap individuals seeking to cheat. These websites, which mimic those operated by fraudsters, were part of a sting operation that exposed at least 180 candidates who paid sums starting from N30,000 for leaked examination questions and fake score upgrades
The Board also said it delisted four Computer-Based Testing (CBT) centres in Abuja.
Candidates who were scheduled to take their examinations at any of the affected centres have been advised to reprint their examination notification slips immediately.
“We regret any inconvenience this may cause, but we will not tolerate excuses from candidates who fail to reprint their slips,” Benjamin warned.
According to Dr Benjamin, the CBT centres were delisted for failing to meet the stringent technical standards required for the UTME exercise.
The delisted centres include:
Adventure Associate, located behind Sheshe Supermarket off Hadejia Road, Kano, Kano State;
Saadatu Rimi College of Education, Zaria Road, Naibawa, Kano, Kano State;
Penta M & F Technical Services Ltd., Centre 2, 96km Sokoto-Jega Road, Tambuwal;
Penta M & F Technical Services Ltd., Centre 1, 96km Sokoto-Jega Road, Tambuwal.
“While JAMB commends the 883 centres that have demonstrated exceptional performance, it unequivocally warns that any centre failing to meet ethical or technical standards, regardless of ownership, will be blacklisted,” Dr Benjamin stated
He further noted that as of Friday, April 25, 2025, over 900,000 candidates had completed the UTME out of the 2,083,600 registered for the 2025 examination.

YABATECH student shot dead by suspected cultists

A yet-to-be-identified student of the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, was shot d3ad in a suspected cult-related attack.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 shortly after students concluded their examinations for the day.
According to punch, the deceased was heading towards the back gate of the institution when some armed men accosted him, pulled out a gun and shot him at close range.
A student privy to the incident told the publication that the incident threw the campus into panic as students, who witnessed the shooting, scampered for safety.
“The student had just finished writing his exams and was heading towards the back gate when some boys approached him and shot him twice on the spot. The whole scenario happened very fast,” the student said.
Another student, who craved anonymity, said the assailants recovered a firearm from the deceased.
“The incident looked more like a cult attack because the victim seemed to have been armed before he was k!lled. We learnt immediately the boys shot him, they searched his bag and recovered a gun and a bullet. They also made sure he was d3ad before they left.”
A source in the school linked the attack to an ongoing rivalry between cult groups on campus.
“The k!lling was in retaliation for a shooting that occurred last week. One suspected cult member was shot but he survived. So this looks more like a payback,” the source claimed.
The spokesperson of the Yabatech, Adekunle Adams, said the incident did not occur on the premises of the institution.
“The incident occurred but not in the college. It happened at a lounge close to the college. There is no cult-related incident in the college, nothing of such,” Adams stated.
Spokesperson of The Lagos State Police Command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident said that the deceased was shot by rival cult members.
The PPRO added that seven suspects had been arrested in connection with the crime, while the investigation was in progress.
“On Tuesday at about 3 pm, a distress call was received at Sabo Division that a suspected cultist was allegedly shot d3ad by a group of suspected rival cult members in the Yaba area,” he said.
“Upon receiving the report, a patrol team was swiftly mobilised to the scene, where the deceased was found lying in a pool of his blood.
“On close observation, visible marks of violence suspected to be bullet wounds were seen on the body while four rounds of live ammunition and some charms were recovered from the deceased’s pocket at the scene. The corpse has been evacuated and deposited in the morgue for autopsy.”

JAMB changes commencement date for UTME 2025

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says its 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will begin on April 24 and not April 25 as earlier announced.
JAMB spokesman, Dr Fabian Benjamin, announced this in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.
Benjamin said the adjustment had been made to accommodate essential commitments by the board and its partner agencies.
He said that prospective candidates could now print their notification slips, which contain vital information regarding their exam details.
He added that the notification slip indicates the examination date, venue (centre), time and other essential details necessary for success of the examination
“Candidates are encouraged to print their notification slips beginning from today, April 19.
“This will provide ample time for logistics arrangements to access their assigned centres within the chosen examination towns.
“To print the notification slip, candidates should visit www.jamb.gov.ng, click on “2025 UTME Slip Printing”, enter registration number and click on “Print Examination Slip”, he said.
The spokesman advised candidates to familiarise themselves with their examination centres after printing their slips, at least one or two days before the examination date.
According to him, this preparation will help ensure a smooth experience on the examination day.
Benjamin further said that candidates would be assigned to centres within their chosen examination towns as no candidate would be placed in a centre outside their selected town.
