PRP Condemns Assault on Journalist by Police in Bauchi, Calls for Probe

The Bauchi State chapter of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has condemned the alleged assault on a journalist, Mohammed Adamu, by police officers during the Eid Durbar celebration in Bununu, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area.

In a statement issued on Monday, the party described the attack on the Albarka Radio reporter as a brutal violation of press freedom and a threat to democracy. The statement was signed by the party’s State Chairman, Abdurrahman Yusuf Muazu (Sardaunan Boto).

According to the PRP, Adamu was assaulted by officers led by the Divisional Police Officer, SP Jamilu Kabir. The party said the attack resulted in head injuries, with the journalist bleeding profusely from the severity of the assault.

“It is unacceptable for media practitioners, who serve as the conscience of society and vital agents of democracy, to be subjected to physical violence and intimidation while performing their professional duties,” the statement read.,

The party noted that the incident served as yet another alarming reminder of the persistent threats faced by journalists in Nigeria. It stressed that such conduct infringes on fundamental rights and undermines press freedom and transparency.

The PRP called on relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. The party also urged security agencies to respect the vital role of journalists in promoting accountability and strengthening democracy.

“Journalists are the watchdogs of society; they play an indispensable role in shaping informed communities, exposing injustice, and holding those in power accountable,” the party added. “Their safety and freedom to operate without fear or intimidation are essential for the sustenance of a democratic Nigeria.”

The PRP concluded by demanding immediate justice for Adamu and called on stakeholders to create an environment where journalists can carry out their duties without fear of violence or harassment.

Meanwhile, the WikkiTimes Media Foundation has disclosed plans to file a lawsuit against the Nigeria Police Force, the Bauchi State Police Command, and SP Jamilu Kabir over the incident.

The Foundation, which condemned the assault as a violation of press freedom and constitutional rights, said it has assembled a team of 15 lawyers led by SG Idrees to pursue the case.
