Rivers State Issues Strict Warning Against Unauthorized Construction and Illegal Building

The Rivers State Government has issued a stern warning to individuals, corporate entities, and developers against carrying out any physical construction or development without prior approval from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

In a special public announcement released on Monday, the State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Amairigha Edward-Hart, emphasized that the ministry remains the sole legal authority empowered to regulate urban planning and physical development across the state.

Edward-Hart reiterated the statutory functions of the ministry, which include implementing state master plans, issuing building permits, enforcing zoning regulations, managing vacant spaces, and driving urban renewal programs. He stressed that no third party or organization is permitted to exercise these responsibilities without official authorization.

The commissioner further noted that the government retains full authority to issue compliance notices, demolish illegal or unapproved structures, and revalidate building plans.

Warning that offenders would be prosecuted, Edward-Hart urged all developers and property owners to obtain all required certifications, building permits, and approvals before initiating construction or demolition projects to avoid legal consequences.
