Security Tightened as Registered Voters Head to Polls for Ekiti Governorship Election

Over one million registered voters are expected at the polls today to elect the next governor of Ekiti State, with the three major political parties expressing immense confidence in capturing the state’s 16 Local Government Areas.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have finalized preparations, deploying upwards of 7,000 polling agents collectively across the 2,445 polling units to monitor the voting process.

Leadership across the competing parties released strong projections on the eve of the election. The ruling APC stated its intent to secure a historic landslide, setting a target of over 500,000 votes across all 16 local governments, 177 wards, and 2,445 polling units. Meanwhile, PDP campaign coordinators claimed the party maintained a 60% popularity advantage going into election day, confidently projecting clear victories in at least 10 local government areas based on grassroots support.

The ADC leadership stated that despite concerns regarding incumbency advantages and potential vote-buying, the goodwill of the electorate would carry the party to a comfortable victory in at least 10 local governments.

To prevent any breakdown of law and order, a massive joint security framework has been activated across the state. The Nigeria Police Force has implemented a strict restriction on both intra-state and inter-state vehicular movement between 12:00 AM and 6:00 PM on election day, covering private cars, commercial vehicles, trucks, and motorcycles.

Furthermore, high-profile individuals and VIPs have been barred from arriving at polling booths or collation centers accompanied by armed security details or escorts. Complementing the police force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed 5,500 personnel to secure voting stations, safeguard critical national infrastructure, and protect local schools.

This election serves as a vital litmus test for the nation’s updated electoral framework, marking the first major governorship poll conducted under the newly revised Electoral Act. An international coalition of civil society organizations, under the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) hub, has issued a joint statement urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain absolute neutrality.

Observers highlighted the critical role of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), warning that any technical failure, configuration errors, or battery depletion could severely damage public confidence.

The hub additionally raised concerns that while mock accreditations were conducted prior to election day, the process did not fully test real-time result transmissions to the public viewing portal, urging INEC to ensure seamless uploads as voting concludes.
