Six Drown in Benue Boat Tragedy, State Pledges Tighter Safety
Six individuals, most of whom were students, have drowned after a boat capsized at the Buruku River crossing point in Benue State.
The incident occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, prompting a high-level assessment visit by state officials on Wednesday.
Speaking during the visit, the Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Hon. Dennis Iyaighgba, conveyed Governor Hyacinth Alia’s condolences and stated the purpose was to console families and evaluate safety measures. He described the event as “deeply tragic” and promised concrete steps to prevent future occurrences.
Officials outlined plans for stricter enforcement of ferry regulations, including the compulsory use of life jackets and other safety equipment. This joint intervention by the State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) and the Ministry follows the governor’s directive for a comprehensive report and immediate action.
The Permanent Secretary of BSEMA, represented by Mr. Orseer Gaius Zege, pledged stronger oversight to ensure compliance with safety standards by operators and passengers.
The District Head of Binev, Chief Dennis Nyitse Hagh, commended the governor’s proactive response and solidarity with the affected community. A minute of silence was held in honour of the victims.
