SSANU Insists on Fair Treatment, Urges FG to Wrap Up Union Talks

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has called on the Federal Government to urgently finalize renegotiations with non-teaching university unions to ensure lasting industrial peace.

SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, made the appeal in Abuja on Tuesday, days after the government signed a renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

While describing the ASUU agreement as commendable, Ibrahim warned that it alone cannot guarantee campus stability. He urged the government to show similar urgency in concluding talks with SSANU, the Non-Academic Staff Union, and the National Association of Academic Technologists.

“Government must urgently conclude renegotiations… to avoid fresh unrest and sustain the current stability on campuses,” he stated.

Ibrahim cautioned that delays risk reviving tensions and could be perceived as unequal treatment. He emphasized that non-teaching staff play critical roles in campus security, healthcare, laboratories, and maintenance, and neglecting their welfare could disrupt academic activities.

The union leader advised the government to act before political activities ahead of the 2027 elections complicate the process, calling for fairness and promptness to maintain trust in the university system.
