Stop Bearing Foreign Names, Be Proud of Yoruba Identity — Traditional Ruler Warns

A traditional ruler, Ifayemi Elebu-Ibon, has called on Yoruba people to stop bearing foreign names and instead take pride in their indigenous identity.

The monarch stressed the importance of Ìṣẹ̀ṣe, the traditional Yoruba religious and cultural practices, urging traditional rulers across Yorubaland to remain connected to their roots and uphold the customs handed down through generations.

He acknowledged that kings may practise Christianity or Islam in their personal lives, but insisted that preserving traditional rites remains an essential responsibility tied to the throne and the well-being of their communities.

According to the traditional ruler, these rites play a significant role in promoting peace, unity, protection, and prosperity within communities.

He added that rulers who genuinely have the interest of their people at heart should not shy away from embracing the cultural responsibilities that come with their position.
