Super Falcons Captain Rasheedat Ajibade Labels WAFCON Criticism Unfair, Calls for National Support

Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade has described public backlash directed at the team as unfair following their early exit from title contention at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, emphasizing the players’ continued commitment to securing a spot at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria missed out on direct World Cup qualification after suffering a 1-0 quarter-final loss to Cameroon. The defeat ended the team’s bid for an 11th continental title, forcing them into the playoff route for a secondary chance at qualification.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference in Casablanca ahead of a crucial fixture against South Africa, Ajibade urged fans and commentators to recognize the effort and personal sacrifices made by squad members when representing the country.

“A lot of people don’t know what players are going through to come and represent the country. Players put in everything on the pitch, and people will still say what they want to say. It is not fair,” Ajibade stated, adding that social media criticism should not overshadow the squad’s dedication.

The 10-time African champions experienced a mixed campaign in Morocco, recovering from a group-stage defeat against Malawi with victories over Zambia and Egypt before their quarter-final exit against Cameroon.

To remain in contention for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil, Nigeria must defeat South Africa to qualify for FIFA’s inter-confederation play-offs scheduled for late 2026.
