Supreme Court Set to Rule Friday on Lamido’s $40,000 False Declaration Case

Supreme Court of Nigeria

The Supreme Court will on Friday, January 16, deliver judgment in the appeal filed by Aminu Sule Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, challenging his conviction for falsely declaring currency at an airport.

Aminu was arrested in December 2012 at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport while travelling to Egypt. Authorities alleged he declared $10,000 but was carrying $50,000 in cash.

In 2015, the Federal High Court in Kano convicted him and ordered the forfeiture of 25% of the undeclared amount. The Court of Appeal later upheld the conviction.

The case, prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), centres on an alleged breach of money laundering and foreign exchange laws.

The Supreme Court’s ruling will determine whether the conviction stands or is overturned.
