Tinubu Pledges AI and Advanced Technology to Bolster National Security
President Bola Tinubu has announced that his administration is prioritizing the integration of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to modernize the Nigerian Army and enhance its operational effectiveness against contemporary security threats.
The President made the declaration on Monday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, during the grand finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2026. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu emphasized that the move is part of a broader strategy to improve combat readiness and operational planning across all security sectors.
“My administration is firmly committed to countering contemporary threats through the adoption of emerging technologies and the building of capacity across all battle spaces,” the President stated. He highlighted that efforts in research and development are gaining momentum, particularly through the revitalization of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to boost local production of combat equipment and foster economic opportunities.
The event, held under the theme “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People,” also served as a platform for military leadership to address the evolving security landscape in the Sahel. Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, noted that the military is actively monitoring the activities of foreign insurgents across the nation’s borders.
“We have already noticed the footprints of foreign jihadists across our borders. However, I would like to assure us all that the Nigerian Army is alert and equal to the task,” Shaibu stated, adding that over 80 percent of troops are currently deployed in ongoing operations across the country.
The ceremony, attended by dignitaries including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, also emphasized the importance of synergy between the military and the private sector. The President noted that the hosting of the African Land Forces Forum alongside the anniversary celebration provides a unique opportunity for intelligence sharing, cybersecurity resilience, and regional coordination.
In his remarks, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara commended the Nigerian Army’s professionalism and pledged the state government’s continued support for personnel welfare and security operations.
