Tragedy as UNILAG Food Vendor Dies of Electrocution
A food vendor named Lekan died on Sunday morning at the College of Medicine, Idi-Araba campus, University of Lagos, after he was electrocuted at a water point on the south side of the campus.
Eyewitnesses said the incident happened after Lekan went to throw away trash and then stopped to wash his hands.
As he tried to turn off a tap, he touched a nearby metal railing, which caused the electrocution.
A student, who asked not to be named, said Lekan was alone at the time. A security officer noticed something was wrong and raised the alarm, bringing people to the scene.
Nearby students tried to revive him before he was taken to the campus Accident and Emergency unit, where he was pronounced dead at the medical facility.
The incident took place around 10 a.m.
The Lagos State Police Command was notified and visited both the scene and the medical facility.
Engineers also checked the site to find out what caused the electrocution.
Initial checks showed that the railing had not been a problem before, as students and staff use the area regularly without incident.
In an official statement, the University of Lagos management expressed deep sorrow over Lekan’s death and offered condolences to his family, friends, and associates.
