Tragedy in Kano as Man Dies Retrieving Burning Cylinder from Well

A 30-year-old man has died after entering a well in Kano State in a fatal attempt to retrieve a burning gas cylinder.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident occurred on Sunday in the Saulawa Quarters of Gwarzo town. According to a statement by the service’s spokesperson, Saminu Abdullahi, a distress call was received, prompting the immediate mobilization of the Gwarzo Fire Service branch.

The victim, identified as Ashahabu Ubale, entered the well during an emergency after the cylinder had been thrown inside. The Fire Service explained that the cylinder opened during the retrieval attempt, releasing gas that displaced the oxygen within the confined space and led to suffocation.

Firefighters successfully pulled Ubale from the well unconscious, but he was later pronounced dead. His body was handed over to Police Constable Muhammad Zakiyyu of the Gwarzo Police Division.

Officials extended condolences to the family and issued a strong warning to the public. The service cautioned residents against entering wells or other confined spaces without proper safety measures and urged heightened awareness around such hazardous areas.

This incident follows separate drowning tragedies reported in the state last week, where two children, an 18-year-old and an 8-year-old, lost their lives in an open water body and a well, respectively.
