Vandalism Hits Gas Pipeline, Cuts Power Generation in Nigeria

Nigeria’s national grid has experienced a drop in electricity generation due to gas supply constraints caused by a vandalism incident at an upstream gas pipeline network, according to the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).

The incident has disrupted gas supply to several gas-fired power plants, leading to a sharp decline in available generation capacity on the grid. Multiple thermal power stations are operating at significantly lower output, affecting overall electricity supply nationwide.

NISO attributes the development to the vulnerability of Nigeria’s power sector to gas supply disruptions, given that over 80% of grid-connected power plants rely on natural gas. The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc confirms the incident, citing low system frequency and inadequate gas supply as reasons for reduced power allocation to distribution companies.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria has implemented load shedding, reducing power allocation to distribution companies. NISO reports that the low output has reduced available generation capacity on the national grid, affecting power supply across the country.
