We Are Building To Protect Benue From Flooding – Alia
The Benue State Government has said the ongoing reconstruction of Iorchia Ayu Road and other locations in Makurdi is designed to address recurring flooding in the state capital through standard roads and modern drainage systems.*
Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia stated this on Monday during an inspection of the projects.
He said the interventions are deliberately targeted at channeling stormwater properly into River Benue.
“For us, this is not just about constructing roads; it is about solving problems, protecting our people and planning for the future,” the governor said.
Alia noted that flooding has been a recurring challenge in Makurdi during the rainy season, adding that the government is investing in quality drainage infrastructure to improve water flow and ensure proper management of rainwater.
He said recent heavy rainfall across parts of Nigeria underscored the need for the interventions, adding that the state is closely monitoring the situation.
“Our ongoing flood-control and drainage projects are part of our broader commitment to making Benue safer,” he said.
The governor assured that his administration will continue to supervise and deliver infrastructure that directly improves the lives of citizens.
“It is our determination to ensure that Makurdi never again suffers the devastating effects of flooding,” Alia added
