Xenophobia: Police tighten security, warn against reprisal attacks on South African businesses

The Nigeria Police Force has called on Nigerians to remain calm following reports of fresh xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa, while warning against any form of reprisal on South African nationals or businesses within the country.

Security and intelligence agencies have reviewed the situation and put in place measures to prevent any breakdown of law and order. This followed a recent joint security assessment chaired by the National Security Adviser.

In a statement released on Sunday, the police assured the public that there was no cause for alarm, adding that the Federal Government was actively engaging relevant authorities through diplomatic, intelligence, and security channels to resolve the situation peacefully.

While acknowledging public concerns over the reported attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, the police cautioned citizens against taking the law into their own hands. They warned that reprisal attacks, violence, intimidation, destruction of property, hate speech, or any conduct capable of threatening public peace and national security would not be tolerated.

The police emphasised that Nigeria remains a country governed by the rule of law, and all persons legally residing in the country are entitled to protection regardless of their nationality. Any attempt to target South African diplomatic facilities, businesses, or other lawful interests within Nigeria will be treated as a criminal offence.

The public was also urged to avoid spreading unverified or inflammatory information, particularly on social media, as such content could worsen tensions and undermine diplomatic efforts.

Security measures have been strengthened around critical national assets, foreign missions, and other key locations across the country, with adequate deployments made to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property, preserving public peace, and maintaining national security, while assuring Nigerians that relevant government institutions are actively managing the situation in the interest of national security and international relations.
