Nigeria’s Borders Now Secure, Says Interior Minister

Nigeria’s borders are now better protected under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has said. The minister attributed the progress to Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening national security, highlighting key achievements by the Ministry of Interior, including prison reforms, strengthened border security, installation of e-gates at major airports, and innovations in passport administration.

Speaking at the Theatre Arts and Motion Picture Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) Professional and Empowerment Summit 2025 in Lagos, Tunji-Ojo said the ministry had cleared about 200,000 passport application backlogs, boosting public confidence in service delivery. He credited the Tinubu administration for the improvements, aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“We’ve installed e-gates at major airports, including Lagos and Abuja, enhancing security and efficiency. Our borders are better protected today, and correctional facilities have seen significant reforms,” Tunji-Ojo said. He acknowledged the challenge of the passport backlog was inherited but emphasized it was addressed head-on.

TAMPAN honoured Tunji-Ojo as Man of the Year for his performance, with TAMPAN President Bolaji Amusan praising his clarity, innovation, and commitment to restoring public confidence. Amusan noted the minister’s reforms had placed national interest above convenience, aligning with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The summit, themed “The Right Man in Governance: Advancing Mr President’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” featured performances and a parade by TAMPAN members, who were urged to align their work with national purpose and maintain high standards.
