Cross River Govt Cracks Down on Unlicensed Traditional Medics
The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) in Cross River State has commended Governor Bassey Otu for cracking down on unlicensed traditional medicine practitioners in Calabar, the state capital. At least 10 practitioners have been arrested and charged to court following a petition by NMA over alleged illicit activities.
NMA had written to Governor Otu, the state Commissioner of Health, Dr Egbe Ayuk, and the Commissioner of Police, Rasheed Afegbua, over the illegal operation of a group holding traditional medical trade fairs at the Calabar Municipality Council Headquarters. The association raised concerns that their activities could lead to health challenges for unsuspecting populations, as they market unverified claims and products without NAFDAC approvals.
In a statement, NMA Cross River State branch chairman Dr Ezoke Epoke and secretary Dr Akanimo Ekeruke lauded the governor’s swift action, describing it as a “proactive step and commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of residents.”
“The Nigerian Medical Association, Cross River State Branch, sincerely thank His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, and the entire State Government for their decisive action against unlicensed traditional medicine vendors operating illegally in the state,” the statement read.
NMA stressed the importance of regulation in healthcare, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding public health and promoting safe medical practices in the state.
The association’s efforts align with the state government’s goal of ensuring quality healthcare for everyone.
