Ogun state rolls Measles, Rubella Vaccination Drive
Ogun State is set to vaccinate 2.9 million children aged 9 months to 14 years against Measles and Rubella (MR) from January 20 to 29, 2026.
The Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Healthcare Board, Dr. Elijah Ogunsola, announced this at a stakeholders’ engagement, stating the campaign aims to reduce the high number of measles cases recorded in the state last year.
The vaccination drive will cover 20,000 settlements, with teams stationed at designated points not more than 500 meters apart. Dr. Ogunsola reassured the public about the safety of the MR vaccine, urging parents to participate without fear. The campaign will target schools, churches, and mosques to ensure all eligible children are reached ¹.
Rubella, also known as German measles, poses serious risks, particularly for pregnant women, and can lead to Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS), causing blindness, deafness, heart defects, or brain damage in newborns.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) notes that Rubella is becoming a major health concern in Nigeria, prompting nationwide MR vaccination campaigns since late 2025, with the goal of elimination by 2030.
