Health Experts Warn Parents: A Chubby Child Isn’t Necessarily a Healthy Child
Medical specialists are urging parents to move beyond the common misconception that a child’s plumpness equates to good health, cautioning that this belief can lead to anxiety and unhealthy feeding practices.
Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Ayodele Renner and Dietitian-Nutritionist Olusola Malomo emphasized that healthy growth is complex and cannot be judged by appearance alone. They warned that overnutrition and childhood obesity are real risks, even in young children, and that rapid weight gain can sometimes signal underlying health issues.
“A common myth is the belief that a child who is not fat is not growing well. Some mothers believe their child must look chubby to be healthy, but that’s not true,” said Dr. Renner. He stressed that a slender child can be perfectly healthy and active.
The experts advised parents to rely on objective tools like standardized growth charts which track weight, height, and BMI and regular pediatric check-ups, rather than visual assessment. If growth concerns arise, they recommend immediate consultation with a healthcare provider for proper evaluation and guidance.,
The call aims to shift the focus from outward size to balanced nutrition and holistic development for long-term child well-being.
