Edo Government Calls for Calm After Ekpoma Security Protest
The Edo State Government has urged residents to maintain calm and avoid actions that could disrupt security operations, following a protest in Ekpoma on Saturday.
The protest was sparked by the killing of a youth, allegedly by kidnappers, which heightened existing concerns over insecurity in the area. Residents blocked roads and burned tires, demanding improved safety measures.
In a statement, State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua, acknowledged citizens’ right to express concerns but emphasized that “matters of security require calm, coordination and constructive engagement.” He warned that blocking roads could inadvertently expose people to further risks.
The government stated that Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration is addressing security through measures like strengthening the Edo Security Corps and community collaboration, and urged the public to use official channels to share intelligence.
Meanwhile, the police confirmed that the Commissioner of Police was deployed to the area. Authorities also reported that nine kidnap victims, including five children, were rescued unhurt on Friday after a drone-assisted operation forced kidnappers to flee their camp.
