Northern Senators Urge Expanded Security Recruitment Amid Wave of Attacks

The Northern Senators Forum has called on the Federal Government to immediately increase the recruitment of security personnel to counter a surge in violent attacks across several states.

The appeal follows recent assaults in Kwara, Katsina, and Benue states, which are reported to have resulted in more than 130 deaths.

In a condolence message issued on Thursday, the forum’s Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, expressed solidarity with the affected states while pressing for stronger security measures.

“We call on the Federal Government to increase security personnel recruitment to combat these threats,” Yar’Adua stated. He acknowledged existing efforts by security agencies but emphasized the need for reinforced manpower.

The forum extended its “deepest condolences” to the governments and people of the three states, describing the violence as a “stark reminder of the insecurity plaguing our nation.”

This parliamentary intervention highlights growing concern in the National Assembly over deteriorating security, particularly in rural areas vulnerable to armed groups.

The call follows a particularly deadly attack Tuesday night on Woro and Nuku communities in Kwara State’s Kaiama Local Government Area. Initial estimates feared over 100 fatalities, though Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq later confirmed 75 deaths.

Governor AbdulRazaq characterized the victims as “local Muslims massacred for refusing to surrender to extremists preaching a strange doctrine.”

A separate assault in Benue State’ Kwande Local Government Area claimed additional lives, compounding the national toll.

The continuing violence has amplified demands from lawmakers for enhanced security deployments, improved intelligence operations, and sustained federal action to address underlying drivers of instability.
