Woman Arrested After Accusing Police of Extorting Students in Oyo State
A woman who accused police officers of extorting money from students and travellers along the Igbo-Ora–Eruwa road in Oyo State has been arrested and transferred out of the local area command, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The woman was taken into custody on Tuesday by operatives of the Ibarapa Area Command and later moved to Ibadan. Family sources say her lawyer was denied access to her at the station before the transfer.
Her arrest comes days after she shared a video online in which she alleged that police personnel stationed along the route were routinely stopping motorists and collecting money from them.
In the video, she questioned why officers, who she noted are paid by the government, would resort to extorting innocent citizens, including students traveling home for the holidays.
“It seems like a play but it wasn’t,” she said. “When you get to Igbo-Ora en route to Eruwa, the number of police officers you will meet on the road are countless.”
She described how students were reportedly forced to pay between N20,000 and N30,000, despite pleading with officers.
The Nigerian Police Force is yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident or the circumstances surrounding her arrest.
