Children’s Day Chaos: Edo Police Arrest Three Bouncers Over Pepper Spray Incident

The Edo State Police Command has arrested three bouncers in connection with the disorder that marred the Children’s Day celebration at the Sam Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

In a statement issued on Monday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, disclosed that a police operative had also been arrested for using tear gas in a separate incident that led to the death of a citizen. Additionally, a woman identified as Rebecca Hassan, alleged to be the supplier of the pepper spray used during the stadium chaos, has been taken into custody.

The statement expressed grave concern over the rising proliferation and unauthorised use of restricted security equipment such as pepper spray and tear gas canisters by private individuals, bouncers, vigilantes, and unauthorised security outfits across the state.

According to the police, on May 25, 2026, a police officer attached to the command unlawfully discharged tear gas at Ogida, Benin City, resulting in the loss of a life. The officer was immediately arrested and is facing disciplinary and criminal proceedings.

Two days later, on May 27, during the Children’s Day event at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, private bouncers unlawfully released pepper spray inside the venue, causing panic and affecting several children and other attendees.

Following investigations, three bouncers linked to the act were arrested: Ifeanyi John Paul, 36; Ola Ibikunle, 46; and Onoha Chukwuoji, 33. Further inquiry led to the arrest of Rebecca Hassan, accused of supplying the pepper spray used at the event.

The command warned that the unauthorised possession or use of such devices is treated as assault or an act capable of causing grievous harm or death. It directed all individuals, private security personnel, bouncers, and vigilante groups in possession of pepper spray, tear gas, or similar restricted equipment to desist immediately, adding that any person found with such items, including sellers and distributors, will be prosecuted.

The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, reassured residents that the command remains committed to protecting citizens’ rights and will not tolerate any act that threatens public peace and safety in the state.
