Accord Party Demands Probe Into Shooting of Osun LG Chairman

The Accord Party has called for a full-scale investigation into the shooting of its local government chairman in Osun State, describing the attack as politically charged and unacceptable.

Asimiyu Ajibola, the party’s chairman for Osogbo Local Government Area, was shot on Wednesday night by two gunmen on a motorcycle in the MDS area of Osogbo. He is currently receiving treatment at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital.

In a statement on Thursday, the national leadership of the party condemned what it termed a politically motivated assassination attempt, linking the violence to the growing tension ahead of the state’s governorship election scheduled for August 12, 2026.

The party described the attack as outrageous, barbaric, and wicked, while praying for the victim’s speedy recovery.

Accord Party has urged the police and the Department of State Services to launch a high-powered investigation to uncover those behind the attack and their sponsors, insisting that they must face the full weight of the law.

The party further alleged that its members have been repeatedly targeted by political violence in Osun State, including attacks on its campaign properties and secretariat. It claimed that security agencies had been notified of threats in the past, yet no one has been prosecuted.

Declaring that “enough is enough,” the party vowed not to be intimidated ahead of the gubernatorial poll, reaffirming its commitment to issue-based campaigning.

The party also expressed support for Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election bid, describing Osun as an Accord stronghold and the governor as deserving of a second term.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that operatives responded to a distress call around 9:50 pm and evacuated the victim to a hospital. A manhunt for the attackers is currently underway.
