Peter Obi Questions Political Priorities, Calls for Transparency in Credential Verification

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has publicly questioned the priorities of the nation’s political leaders, arguing that the country’s deepening security and economic crises should take precedence over ongoing political activities.

The former Anambra State governor made these remarks on Tuesday following the completion of his Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination form. Reflecting on a specific question in the document which asks whether a candidate has ever been adjudged to be of unsound mind Obi challenged his fellow political leaders to reflect on whether their current actions demonstrate the necessary mental and moral clarity to lead the nation.

“Can we, as the political leaders of today’s Nigeria, truly say we are exhibiting the characteristics of a sound mind?” Obi asked in a statement released via his official social media platform.

He pointed to the persistent insecurity, widespread hunger, and the alleged misuse of public funds as evidence that the political class is failing to address the country’s most urgent needs. According to Obi, a government truly focused on national interest would treat these existential threats as a national emergency, mobilizing security agencies, experts, and community stakeholders to confront them with immediate resolve rather than focusing on partisan maneuvers ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In addition to his concerns about leadership priorities, Obi advocated for greater electoral transparency. He urged INEC to make the academic certificates and credentials submitted by all candidates seeking elective office available to the public. Referencing a section of the nomination form regarding the submission of forged documents, he argued that public disclosure of these credentials would help strengthen trust in the electoral process and ensure that leaders adhere to established rules.

“Why shouldn’t INEC, in the interest of ensuring that our leaders are exemplary in following the rules and to strengthen public confidence in our electoral process, publish the academic certificates and credentials submitted by every candidate seeking elective office?” he queried.

Obi concluded by stating that Nigeria’s current situation demands leadership defined by competence, character, and a genuine commitment to public service, asserting that the country’s stability must remain the primary focus of anyone seeking to govern.
