SDP Demands Resignation of Chief of Staff Over Corruption Allegations
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has formally called for the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, to step down from his public roles, citing ongoing allegations of misconduct linked to the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council.
During the party’s second National Executive Committee meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, leadership officials argued that Gbajabiamila’s continued presence in office could undermine public confidence in the administration. The call for his resignation extends to his recent appointment as chairman of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill.
SDP National Chairman, Professor Sadiq Gombe, asserted that it is improper for a public official to remain in a high-ranking position while facing serious accusations. “There is no way a public officer will be accused of something of this magnitude and still remain glued to his position,” Gombe stated, emphasizing the need for an independent investigation into the claims.
Beyond the allegations of misconduct, the SDP leadership also expressed concern over the composition of the 12-member committee tasked with drafting the National Policing Bill. Party officials alleged that the committee lacks regional balance, noting that the majority of its members are drawn from a single section of the country. They cautioned that such appointments could be perceived as insensitive to the nation’s diversity and could negatively impact public trust as the country approaches future elections.
The controversy centers on recent reports alleging that Gbajabiamila received funds through a proxy to facilitate an appointment, claims that the Presidency has officially denied. President Bola Tinubu has previously expressed confidence in his aide, dismissing the allegations as a calculated smear campaign.
While some political stakeholders have opted to wait for the conclusion of ongoing investigations, the SDP maintained that, for the sake of decorum and transparency, the Chief of Staff should relinquish his responsibilities to allow for an impartial probe. The party concluded that the current situation reflects a broader loss of direction within the federal administration, urging the government to prioritize accountability and national unity.
