APC Intervention Temporarily Halts Move to Remove Ondo Assembly Speaker

A planned move to impeach the Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, has been temporarily suspended following the intervention of leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

The development came after concerns within the Assembly escalated, with a majority of lawmakers reportedly expressing dissatisfaction with the Speaker’s leadership and calling for his removal over allegations of financial impropriety.

In a bid to prevent the situation from worsening, APC leaders held discussions with the aggrieved lawmakers and urged all parties to allow ongoing consultations to continue. The intervention resulted in a temporary truce, with lawmakers agreeing to suspend further action while efforts are made to resolve the dispute.

Party officials said the objective is to maintain stability within the Assembly and avoid a political crisis that could affect governance and party unity. They stressed that the mediation process is aimed at addressing concerns raised by lawmakers while preserving peace within the legislative arm.

Despite the intervention, some lawmakers maintained that their grievances remain unresolved and insisted that the decision to pause the impeachment process should not be interpreted as a withdrawal of their position. According to them, confidence in the Speaker’s leadership has been significantly eroded, although they have chosen to respect the party’s call for restraint.

For now, the Speaker remains in office as consultations continue, with political stakeholders working to find a lasting solution to the dispute. The outcome of the ongoing mediation is expected to determine the next steps in the Assembly’s leadership crisis.
