Obi Condemns Fresh Attacks in Benue and Plateau, Demands Proactive Security Architecture

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the recent resurgence of violent attacks in Benue and Plateau states, describing the persistent bloodshed as deeply disturbing and unacceptable.

His reaction follows a series of weekend assaults that claimed the lives of at least 18 people in Benue State and wiped out an entire family of nine, including a two-month-old infant, in Plateau State. The Benue attacks targeted the Otukpo-Nobi community and Akpachi village in Otukpo Local Government Area, while the Plateau killings occurred in the Kum and Wereng-Camp communities of Riyom Local Government Area.

Obi emphasized that the federal government must urgently transition away from reactive security measures and establish an intelligence-driven, proactive defense system capable of preventing such atrocities.

> “The time has come to move beyond routine condemnations after every attack,” Obi stated. “Nigerians deserve a security architecture that is proactive rather than reactive, driven by intelligence, rapid response and accountability. Those responsible for these atrocities must be identified, arrested and prosecuted. The culture of impunity must end.”

The former Anambra State governor stressed that the primary constitutional duty of any administration remains the absolute protection of human lives and property. He noted that the ongoing cycle of fear, displacement, and violence has forced entire agricultural communities to abandon their lands, severely undermining national stability and local economies.

Extending his condolences to the affected families and the governments of both Benue and Plateau states, Obi urged leaders and citizens to view the crisis through the lens of human dignity rather than partisan politics, calling for a unified national will to restore peace and security to the region.
