FG Sets 90-Day Deadline for New National Security Strategy

The Federal Government has inaugurated a high-level committee to develop a comprehensive National Threat Assessment and a rolling Five-Year Strategic Defence Operations Plan aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security framework.

The committee, inaugurated on Wednesday on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, has been given 90 days to submit both documents for presidential consideration and approval.

Speaking at the inauguration, the government said the initiative is designed to improve Nigeria’s ability to identify, anticipate and respond to evolving security challenges. It noted that modern threats are becoming increasingly complex and require coordinated planning, efficient resource allocation and long-term strategic thinking.

The proposed framework will provide a clear link between identified threats, operational objectives, required capabilities and the resources needed to achieve measurable security outcomes. It is also expected to guide procurement, force development and other national security priorities.

According to the government, the National Threat Assessment will offer a detailed evaluation of existing and emerging security risks, while the Five-Year Strategic Defence Operations Plan will translate those findings into practical operational strategies and priorities.

The defence plan will be reviewed annually to reflect changing security realities, technological advancements and lessons from ongoing operations.

The committee is also expected to identify capability gaps, determine equipment and personnel requirements, set procurement priorities and establish mechanisms for monitoring implementation and measuring results.

Officials said the initiative would provide military and security agencies with a unified strategic direction and ensure that personnel are equipped with the resources and support needed to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

The committee comprises top security and defence officials, including representatives from the military, intelligence agencies and law enforcement bodies. Subcommittees will also be established to focus on specialised areas and ensure the assignment is completed within the stipulated timeframe.
