Rights group accuses Ekiti Oba of rights violations, writes IG
The Nigerian Human Rights Community (NHRC), a coalition of 121 civil rights groups and community-based organizations across the country, has raised serious concerns over alleged gross human rights violations perpetrated by a traditional ruler in Ekiti State. In response to numerous complaints received, the NHRC has called upon the Inspector General of Police, IG Kayode Egbetokun, to thoroughly investigate the matter.
According to a statement released by NHRC’s Deputy Secretary, Taiwo Adeleye, residents of Ayegunle Ekiti have lodged a barrage of petitions, claiming that the traditional ruler, Oba Johnson Folorunshi Aderiye, the Alayegunle of Ayegunle Ekiti, is allegedly behind a series of arbitrary arrests and detentions of locals. The situation has resulted in a climate of fear and intimidation within the community, leading to concerns about the potential loss of lives and a breakdown of law and order.
The origins of the current situation can be traced back to a dispute dating back four years ago, involving the construction of a civic centre by the Ekiti State Community Development Authority (EKSCDA), which pitted the Oba and his entire chiefs against each other. Despite efforts to resolve the conflict, tensions resurfaced after six months, and subsequent events, such as clashes with the “Olori Awo” (Ojo Obasua), further exacerbated the situation.
The NHRC states that during a protest by community youths against the “Olori Awo,” who was allegedly involved in various misconducts, the Oba failed to take appropriate action and instead supported him. The rights group also highlights an incident during the “Elefon” festival when the Oba allegedly disrupted the event and detained a prominent youth leader.
In light of these serious allegations, the NHRC reveals that several individuals, including community youths and chiefs opposing the Oba’s actions, have been detained on orders they believe to be from the Oba. The names of those currently in detention have been provided in the NHRC’s statement.
The NHRC expresses grave concern over the deteriorating situation in Ayegunle Ekiti, where the Oba’s supporters, led by Ojo Obasua, have reportedly made the community uninhabitable. Frequent attacks on residents and businesses, coupled with alleged misuse of the police force, have paralyzed daily activities within the community.
In light of the gravity of the situation and the potential for further human rights abuses, the NHRC urgently calls on the Inspector General of Police, IG Kayode Egbetokun, to conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the alleged rights violations in Ayegunle Ekiti. The NHRC seeks justice for the victims and demands that those responsible for any wrongdoings be held accountable for their actions.
