Abia to Host Deputy British High Commissioner, Approves Aba as Innovation City

The Abia State Government is set to host the British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Johnny Baxter, during his official visit to the state from September 16 to 17, 2026.

The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, said Baxter’s visit would focus on key areas including power, trade and commerce, transportation, education, digital transformation and governance. He is also expected to participate in the flag-off of the SPRIRET Initiative, a UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office-funded programme aimed at promoting digital inclusion in the state.

During the visit, Baxter is expected to pay a courtesy call on Governor Alex Otti and tour the Geometric Power Plant, Ariaria International Market, Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal, the Solar Project and Ubakala Smart School Project.

Meanwhile, the state government has officially designated Aba as a Creative and Innovative City, citing its longstanding commercial, industrial and creative significance.

The government also approved the National War Museum, Ojukwu Bunker and Government College in Umuahia as state monuments, while Ibom Waterfall in Arochukwu and Ulochukwu Cave in Alayi were designated natural monuments.

Kanu said the move was aimed at preserving Abia’s cultural heritage, promoting tourism and creating new economic opportunities for the state.
