Adekunle Fajuyi Centenary Summit Honours Hero, Family Calls for Greater National Recognition

The life and legacy of Lieutenant-Colonel Francis Adekunle Fajuyi, Nigeria’s former military governor of the Western Region, were commemorated on Friday during the Adekunle Fajuyi Leadership Summit at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

The event, hosted by students of Adekunle Fajuyi Hall as part of the centenary celebrations marking 100 years since his birth, served as a platform to reflect on the values of courage, integrity, and selfless service that defined the late officer’s life.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman of Adekunle Fajuyi Hall, Opeyemi Michael Awoniyi, emphasized that the summit was designed to inspire the younger generation by highlighting the historic principles of leadership and loyalty demonstrated by Lt. Col. Fajuyi, particularly his decision to stand by Head of State Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi during the 1966 counter-coup, which ultimately cost both men their lives.

The late officer’s daughter, Princess Adesola Monica Fajuyi-Olajuyigbe, delivered a deeply personal reflection on her father’s character. While expressing gratitude to the university and the Ekiti State Government for their ongoing efforts to preserve her father’s memory including the recent remodelling of the Fajuyi Memorial Park in Ado-Ekiti she urged the Federal Government to grant her father greater national recognition through a posthumous national honour.

Princess Fajuyi-Olajuyigbe also used the platform to appeal to the Oyo State Government to revive the proposed Aguiyi-Ironsi and Adekunle Fajuyi National Memorial Park at Lalupon, the site where the two leaders were assassinated. She noted that establishing the park as a permanent monument would honor their shared sacrifice and serve as a symbol of national unity.

Participants at the summit agreed that the leadership qualities displayed by Lt. Col. Fajuyi are essential for modern Nigeria, calling on educational institutions and political leaders to continue promoting his history as a benchmark for ethical governance and patriotism.
