Airline Tightens inflight rules, to Kick Out Passengers Who Refuses Headphones

United Airlines has tightened its in-flight conduct rules, updating its Contract of Carriage to explicitly allow the airline deny boarding or remove passengers who play audio or video content without using headphones.

The reports the revised provision appears under Rule 21: Refusal of Transport, which outlines circumstances under which the airline may refuse to carry a passenger or remove them from a flight.

In the updated clause, the airline states that it may take action against: “Passengers who fail to use headphones while listening to audio or video content”.

The inclusion places such behaviour alongside other forms of disruptive conduct that can trigger enforcement by crew members.

Under Rule 21, United Airlines reserves broad discretion to act when a passenger’s behaviour affects safety, comfort, or order onboard.

The contract makes clear that the airline may refuse to board a passenger, remove a passenger from an aircraft, or impose future travel restrictions.

While the document does not single out penalties specific to the headphone violation, its placement within the refusal framework signals that non-compliance could escalate if passengers ignore crew instructions.

The move reflects growing concern across the aviation industry over passenger etiquette in increasingly crowded cabins.

Incidents involving loud mobile devices, ranging from music playback to video streaming, have become a frequent source of tension on flights.

By codifying the rule, United Airlines is providing clearer backing for flight attendants, who often serve as first responders to onboard disputes.

A section of the contract underscores this authority, noting that passengers may be denied transport if their conduct is deemed “disorderly, offensive, abusive or violent,” or if it interferes with “the comfort or safety of other passengers”.
