Allied People’s Movement Demands Transparency Over Fuel Subsidy Removal Savings
The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has officially called on the Federal Government to provide a comprehensive and transparent account of the funds generated from the removal of the petrol subsidy since May 2023.
In a statement released on Thursday, the party argued that the current administration has failed to adequately explain how the trillions of naira allegedly saved from the policy have been utilized. While the government has maintained that these savings are being redirected into critical sectors to support national development, the APM dismissed these claims as vague, asserting that the administration has failed to provide verifiable figures or identify specific projects funded by these revenues.
The APM spokesperson, Abubakar Yusuf, highlighted the severe economic challenges currently facing Nigerians, including rising inflation, increased costs for food and transportation, and a general decline in purchasing power. The party pointed out that since the removal of the subsidy, the pump price of fuel has surged significantly, contributing to a broader cost-of-living crisis.
“APM’s demand is predicated on the worsening economic hardship and poverty rate, high cost of living, collapsed public facilities and yawning infrastructure deficit across the country since the emergence of the Tinubu administration,” the statement noted.
The party further alleged that reports of financial mismanagement and the diversion of funds have deepened public distrust. According to the APM, the government’s rhetoric regarding economic reforms is disconnected from the lived realities of citizens, many of whom are struggling to afford basic necessities.
The APM has demanded that the government publish an independently verifiable impact assessment of the subsidy removal policy. Specifically, the party is calling for a detailed public report that outlines:
* The total amount saved from the subsidy removal since May 2023.
* A comprehensive list of projects funded by these proceeds.
* The locations and current status of these interventions.
* A clear breakdown of the beneficiaries and measurable outcomes achieved.
The party concluded by emphasizing that the true measure of any economic reform should be its tangible impact on the welfare of the people, insisting that the government must move beyond broad claims and embrace full fiscal accountability.
