Argentina Beat England 2-1 to Reach Back-to-Back World Cup Final

Argentina kept their dreams of a historic title defense alive on Wednesday evening, coming from behind to defeat England 2-1 in a thrilling 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final at Atlanta Stadium

La Albiceleste will now face Spain in Sunday’s final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where they have the chance to become the first nation to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil achieved the feat in 1958 and 1962.

The match began as a cagey, tactical battle. Although England dominated possession early on, Argentina’s physical presence successfully disrupted their rhythm and kept clear-cut chances at a premium.

The Three Lions came close to breaking the deadlock in the 33rd minute when John Stones headed a Declan Rice cross just wide. Moments later, Lionel Messi’s shot at the other end was blocked by Harry Kane. The rebound fell kindly to Enzo Fernández, who unleashed a long-range effort that flashed narrowly wide of the top corner.

Shortly after the restart, England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was called into action, parrying a sharp strike from Julián Álvarez and recovering well to watch the Atlético Madrid forward’s follow-up effort deflect out for a corner.

The breakthrough finally came in the 54th minute, and it was England who struck first. Morgan Rogers whipped a dangerous, pinpoint cross into the penalty area, allowing Barcelona forward Anthony Gordon to steer the ball into the net and hand England the lead.

Faced with elimination, the defending champions responded with relentless pressure. England defended resolutely, aided by Pickford, who produced a brilliant save in the 68th minute to deny a header from Argentine substitute Nico González. Eight minutes later, Alexis Mac Allister nearly restored parity, only to be denied by the woodwork.

Argentina’s persistent offensive finally paid off in the 85th minute. Fernández found space on the edge of the area and curled a sublime strike past a helpless Pickford to send the match into extra-time.

With momentum firmly on their side, Argentina completed the dramatic turnaround in the extra period. Capitalizing on his legendary vision, Lionel Messi delivered a brilliant, pinpoint cross to Lautaro Martínez, who rose to head home the winning goal.

Despite a valiant effort, England was left heartbroken, unable to protect their lead as their quest for a first World Cup triumph since 1966 came to an agonizing end. Argentina, meanwhile, marches on to a blockbuster showdown against Spain on July 19.
