Four Nigerian Students Make Historic Debut at Spelling Bee World Cup in China

In a historic milestone for Nigeria’s academic representation, four exceptional students are currently in Shanghai, China, participating in the country’s first-ever appearance at the Spelling Bee World Cup. The global tournament, which runs from July 10 to 20, 2026, features top young spellers from across the globe competing for the world title.

The achievement follows an official announcement by the Nigeria Spelling Bee organization, which tracked the students’ rigorous journey from local competitions to the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe, and finally to the global arena. The four representatives carrying the nation’s and continent’s hopes are Oluwadamilola Adeolu from St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti; Abdurrahman Yusuf and Maryam Yusuf, both from Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin; and Chinedu Okediachi from Madonna International Schools, Asaba.

Leading the delegation is 14-year-old Oluwadamilola Adeolu, who previously secured the Junior category title at the continental championship in Zimbabwe by outperforming contestants from over 30 countries. Reflecting on her participation ahead of the event, Adeolu expressed eagerness to test her skills against international peers, boost her confidence, and aim for the ultimate prize. She also extended her gratitude to her support network, including the Governor of Ekiti State, her coaches, and her family.

Nigeria’s entry into the World Cup caps off a period of remarkable consistency for the team, which finished as the second-best overall squad during the African championships. Organizers emphasize that the debut in Shanghai marks a significant breakthrough in Nigeria’s growing reputation within international academic circles.
