Armed Gangs Kill Nine Farmers, Abduct Others in Kaduna State Raid

At least nine farmers were killed and several others were abducted during a violent raid by armed gangs in Kaduna State this weekend. The attack occurred on Saturday in the fields surrounding Kakangi village, located within the Birnin Gwari district.

According to preliminary security reports, the violence erupted after farmers successfully repelled a robbery attempt earlier in the day, during which one of the attackers was killed. In an apparent act of retaliation, accomplices of the deceased returned to the farmlands with reinforcements and opened fire on the local farmers.

While official security assessments confirmed nine fatalities with six victims already identified by local authorities community leaders in the area stated the death toll may be as high as ten.

The attack highlights a growing trend of violence targeting agrarian communities across northern and central Nigeria. These groups frequently raid settlements to loot property, impose illegal levies, and kidnap residents for ransom. Despite local peace initiatives brokered in late 2024 aimed at stabilizing the Birnin Gwari district, farming communities continue to face regular assaults, with another major attack reported in the same region just last month.

Local authorities and security agencies are currently monitoring the situation in Kakangi as the community grapples with the aftermath of the raid.
