Atiku Says 2027 Presidential Bid Will Be His Last

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has announced that the 2027 presidential election will be his final attempt to lead Nigeria.

Speaking during an Arise News interview on Wednesday, the 79-year-old politician said the stakes are higher for him this time because it will be his last outing.

“Certainly yes, because the stakes are higher because I believe that will be my last outing. So that’s incontrovertible,” Atiku said when asked if 2027 would mark the end of his presidential ambitions.

When pressed on why Nigerians should still trust him after decades in politics, Atiku argued that his experience sets him apart.

“I represent both the past and the future simply because we have seen various levels of leadership in the country, both young and old, and we’re experiencing them,” he stated.

The former vice-president also expressed disappointment with the performance of younger leaders, noting that expectations have not been fully met.

“I still believe that our expectations of the young leadership are below what we thought,” he said, calling for mentorship from older, more experienced politicians.

Atiku, who will turn 80 before the next election cycle, added that such guidance is best learned from a position of power.

“Sometimes you need to be [in power]. What I was able to learn from President Olusegun Obasanjo through his experience, I couldn’t have learned it outside,” he said.

His latest remarks are expected to revive discussions on age, experience, and generational leadership in Nigeria as the 2027 race begins to take shape.
