Bauchi Records 872 Maternal, Perinatal Deaths In 6 Months

The Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency has disclosed that 872 maternal and perinatal deaths occurred in 123 healthcare facilitiesin Bauchi between July 2022 and December 2022.

The Bauchi State Focal Person for the Maternal and Perinatal Deaths Surveillance Review (MPDSR), Mrs Jummai Inuwa said this at a two-day review meeting conducted in Bauchi.

The MPDSR is a type of continuous surveillance that connects the health information system and processes for quality improvement at all levels, including local and federal, and it entails routine identification, notification, quantification, and determination of the causes and avoidability of all maternal and perinatal deaths, as well as the use of such information to react with actions that will prevent further deaths.

The USAID-Integrated Health Programme (IHP) hosts the Pause and Reflection Meeting every three months to assess activities, pinpoint problems, and provide suggestions for accelerating progress in the state’s health and education sectors.

For this reason, Inuwa stated that “Bauchi State MPDSR documented 56 maternal and 816 perinatal fatalities from July to December 2022.”

General hospitals in Toro, Ningi, and Azare recorded the highest maternal deaths with 14, 11, and 6 respectively, as general hospitals in Toro, Ningi, and Misau recorded the highest perinatal deaths with 162, 111, and 106 respectively.

The MPDSR data is from 123 Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) and 20 general hospitals; 31 maternal and 330 perinatal deaths were reviewed within the stipulated period.
