Bayelsa Police Arrest Two Suspects Over NDU Student’s Murder
The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested two suspected cultists in connection with the killing of a Niger Delta University (NDU) student during a violent clash in Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
The victim, 20-year-old Ebube Jonathan, a 200-level Management Science student, was attacked along Kabaka Street on Tuesday afternoon. According to police reports, the assailants hacked and shot the victim before he was declared dead by medical personnel. Authorities have identified the victim as a suspected member of the Black Axe confraternity.
Acting on intelligence following the incident, officers from the Amassoma Division conducted a rapid operation that led to the arrest of two suspects: 24-year-old Godswin Adobu, a 300-level Fine and Applied Arts student, and 21-year-old Tarilaefa Fesingha. Police stated that the suspects were apprehended at Ending Pele in Amassoma while allegedly preparing to carry out a retaliatory attack. During the arrest, officers recovered two locally made pistols, two live rounds of 9mm ammunition, and various illicit substances.
The Commissioner of Police for Bayelsa State, Iyamah Daniel Edebor, condemned the act and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to eradicating cult-related violence in the state. He issued a stern warning to criminal elements, urging them to renounce illegal activities, and called on local residents to continue assisting law enforcement by reporting suspicious behavior.
Cult-related clashes have historically posed a significant security challenge in the Amassoma area, often resulting in casualties and rising tensions within the university community.
