Belgium names Lukaku in World Cup squad despite fitness concerns
Belgium has included striker Romelu Lukaku in its World Cup squad even though head coach Rudi Garcia admits the veteran forward is not yet fully match-fit after a long injury layoff.
The 33-year-old Napoli striker has made only seven substitute appearances this season, totalling 69 minutes, following a two-month recovery from a hamstring injury.
Garcia said on Friday that Lukaku remains Belgium’s most important striker and all-time leading scorer, but acknowledged he may not be ready to start matches.
“Romelu has recovered, but he’s out of shape, and I’m not sure he’ll be able to start the matches. But he’s our best striker,” Garcia said.
He added that the coaching staff will use the next five weeks to gradually bring Lukaku back to full fitness so he can help the team.
Lukaku, who has scored 89 goals in 124 international appearances, will feature in his fourth consecutive World Cup alongside senior players Thibaut Courtois, Kevin De Bruyne, and Axel Witsel.
Belgium also included Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who recently committed his international future to the country, replacing Lois Openda. Sporting defender Zeno Debast made the squad despite a recent training injury.
Belgium is drawn in Group G alongside Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand, with matches scheduled to be played in the United States and Canada.
