Benue Community Youths Foil Abduction Attempt, Rescue Five Hostages

Vigilant youth groups in the Ugbokolo community, located within the Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State, successfully blocked an attempted abduction of travelers along the busy Ugbokolo-Aokpe road.

The coordinated community response resulted in the safe rescue of five victims and the subsequent arrest of three male individuals suspected of involvement in the criminal ring.

According to local residents, the crisis began late Wednesday night when a gang of heavily armed men ambushed commuters on the road, taking multiple travelers hostage. The development prompted community youths to organize a mobilization effort and launch an immediate search-and-rescue operation into the surrounding forests.

Facing intense tracking by the community workforce, the abductors abandoned their captives and fled into the bush. While five victims were safely retrieved on Wednesday night and quickly reunited with their families, the search continued into Thursday morning. During the ongoing sweep, local youths apprehended three unidentified individuals found in the area, while a fourth managed to evade capture.

Local Authorities Direct Case for Verification

The local government executive leadership has commended the community’s swift defensive action but urged caution regarding the definitive identities of those apprehended.

The Chairman of Okpokwu Local Government, Adah Inalegwu, confirmed the baseline events, highlighting that the intense pressure from the youth groups forced the criminals to yield their hostages.

“When the heat was too much on the kidnappers, they abandoned their victims and ran away,” Inalegwu stated. He noted that while the community intercepted three strangers on Thursday under the suspicion of being part of the gang, local authorities are awaiting a comprehensive security report to confirm their direct involvement in the incident.

The three suspects have been transferred to security agencies for interrogation and formal profiling. Meanwhile, the State Police Command indicated that official documentation on the incident was still being processed by the divisional headquarters at the time of publication.
