Discrepancies Emerge Over Multi-Million Naira Funding for Kogi State Stadium Renovation

A recent investigation by a civic accountability group has uncovered significant irregularities regarding the 2024 budget allocation for the renovation of the Confluence Stadium in Kogi State. While official government documents indicate that over N61 million was disbursed for the project, physical inspections reveal that the facility remains in a state of severe disrepair, with no evidence of renovation work.

The project, which was budgeted for a total of N120 million to bring the stadium up to FIFA standards, has sparked concerns after a review of the state’s fourth-quarter 2024 budget performance document confirmed the release of N61.4 million. Despite these records, observers found the stadium’s stands, seating, and playing surface in a dilapidated condition.

When challenged to clarify the expenditure, the Kogi State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development provided a response that contradicts the official budget implementation report. According to the ministry, the N61.4 million was not utilized for stadium renovations but was instead redirected toward sports competition expenses under a different economic code.

This explanation has drawn sharp criticism from accountability advocates, who argue that the mismatch between public expenditure records and the ministry’s claims suggests a lack of transparency and potential mismanagement of public funds. The discrepancy has raised questions regarding the accuracy of the state’s financial reporting and the integrity of budget implementation.

The situation has prompted calls for the state government to provide a comprehensive public account of how the funds were allocated and utilized. Accountability groups have formally requested that anti-corruption agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), conduct a thorough review of the spending.

As the Confluence Stadium continues to deteriorate, residents and stakeholders are urging authorities to rectify the inconsistencies in official documentation and ensure that public resources are properly accounted for and used for their intended purpose.
