EFCC Lifts Freeze on Osun Government Accounts Following Presidential Directive

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has restored access to bank accounts belonging to the Osun State Government after previously placing restrictions on them over allegations of financial mismanagement.

The accounts, held with major commercial banks, had been frozen as part of an investigation into the handling of billions of naira from ecological funds, intervention funds, and federal allocations. The move generated widespread criticism, with some stakeholders alleging that the action was politically motivated ahead of the recent governorship election in the state.

Following concerns raised over the development, President Bola Tinubu reportedly directed the anti-graft agency to remove the restrictions. Sources within both the Presidency and the Osun State Government confirmed that the directive had been implemented and that the affected accounts are now fully operational.

The unfreezing of the accounts comes after Governor Ademola Adeleke instructed the state’s legal team to withdraw a court case challenging the EFCC’s action.

Neither the EFCC nor the Osun State Government had issued an official statement on the matter as of the time of filing this report. However, officials familiar with the development maintained that the restrictions had been lifted in compliance with the presidential order.

The development is expected to ease financial operations within the state government and bring an end to the dispute over the account freeze.
