Emergency Security Meeting Convened in Plateau After Fresh Attacks Claim 30 Lives
Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has summoned an emergency security council meeting in the wake of continued attacks that have resulted in the deaths of at least 30 residents over the past week.
The high-level meeting, which is currently underway at the Executive Council Chamber of the New Government House in Jos, is being chaired by the governor. It brings together heads of all federal and state security agencies operating in the state.
Among those in attendance are the General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Operation Enduring Peace, Major General Eyitayo Oyinlola, as well as the newly deployed State Commissioner of Police, CP Bassey Ewah. Deputy Governor Ngo Josephine Piyo and Secretary to the State Government, Samuel Jatau, are also present.
The security meeting follows a Thursday night attack in Bassa Local Government Area, where gunmen killed five people in the Nche Shwye Rishi community. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from local leaders.
A community leader in Bassa, Gata Moses, described the killings as “barbaric and senseless.” He said residents woke up to discover the attack, noting that children were among the victims killed in their homes.
Another resident, Nuhu Michael, expressed frustration over the continued violence and called on security agencies to take more decisive action. He urged the government to intensify efforts to protect communities from attacks, expressing hope that the ongoing security council meeting would produce concrete results.
At the time of this report, deliberations at the Government House were still ongoing.
