The Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, has issued a strong appeal to Nigerians to abandon extravagant wedding expenditures, specifically criticizing the rising costs of bridal makeup and matching ceremonial fabrics, known as aso-ebi. Speaking at the 20th-anniversary celebration of the Crystal Muslim Organisation in Abuja, the monarch argued that such excessive spending is insensitive given the current economic climate and the struggle many citizens face in securing basic necessities.

The Emir expressed deep concern over reports of families spending millions of naira on non-essential wedding items, noting instances where bridal makeup costs have reached as high as $10,000, while individual aso-ebi sets are often priced between ₦200,000 and ₦300,000.

He described these practices as excessive and out of touch with the reality of many Nigerians who are unable to afford three square meals a day. Emphasizing that he has personally refused to sponsor such costs for family weddings, he encouraged others to adopt a similar stance of restraint.

While clarifying that he is not opposed to the concept of celebration, the traditional ruler urged for a shift in priorities. He warned that the widening gap between the lifestyles of the affluent and the struggles of the underprivileged poses a significant social risk.
