Fatal Shooting Reported at San Jose World Cup Fan Zone
A shooting incident at San Pedro Square in San Jose, a designated FIFA World Cup fan zone, has left one person dead and another in critical condition.
Local police responded to reports of gunfire in the popular entertainment district on Sunday evening. Upon arrival, officers discovered two victims. One individual was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Although the location has served as a central hub for thousands of football fans to gather for public match screenings throughout the tournament, authorities confirmed that the incident did not occur during a match. The day’s final tournament fixture had concluded several hours before the shooting.
The area was immediately cordoned off by police, leading to the closure of several surrounding streets and the temporary shutdown of nearby bars and businesses as detectives began a homicide investigation. Witnesses described a significant emergency response, with police vehicles and medical personnel flooding the square to attend to the victims.
As of Sunday, investigators have not disclosed a motive for the shooting, and no arrests have been announced. Law enforcement officials remain at the scene, processing evidence and interviewing witnesses to determine the circumstances behind the violence.
The San Pedro Square fan zone is one of several designated viewing areas across the San Francisco Bay Area, which has been hosting matches during the ongoing World Cup. The investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.
