Fault On EKEDC Feeders Caused Lekki Outage, Not TCN Transformer — TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has faulted a statement by Eko Electricity Distribution Company, EKEDC, on the outage at the Lekki Transmission Substation, saying the incident was caused by faults on EKEDC’s feeders.

In a statement on Thursday, TCN described as incorrect EKEDC’s claim that its T11 transformer tripped unexpectedly and was awaiting inspection.

According to TCN, EKEDC’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders tripped simultaneously at about 4:34am on August 26, 2026 due to overcurrent and earth fault. The fault led to the inter-tripping of the primary and secondary breakers of TCN’s TR1 60MVA, 132/33kV transformer, with a loud bang and smoke reported.

TCN said its maintenance team responded swiftly, rehabilitated the damaged secondary breaker and restored both breakers the same day. However, another trip occurred when EKEDC attempted to reclose the Oniru feeder during a test, as the same relay indications reappeared.

“This incident was strictly related to EKEDC’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders,” TCN stated, adding that its technical team remains on site to restore supply as quickly as possible.
