Five Dead, Thirteen Injured in Early Morning Road Crash in Plateau State

A fatal road accident in the early hours of Sunday has claimed five lives and left thirteen others with injuries in Langtang North Local Government Area.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. at the Zangzat Roundabout in Langtang. According to preliminary reports, the incident involved a trailer, registered in Plateau State with plate number JJN 383 YZ, which was transporting marketers from Shendam to Jos.

The Chairman of Langtang North Local Government, Pirfa Tyem, confirmed the tragedy in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Precious Yakubu. Preliminary investigations point to overspeeding and overloading as the primary causes of the accident.

“Upon receiving the report, the Executive Chairman immediately directed a team from the Local Government Council to visit the scene of the accident and the hospital to assess the situation, sympathise with the victims, and ascertain their immediate needs,” the statement read.

The injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment at the General Hospital in Langtang.

Chairman Tyem expressed his profound condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery. He also issued a strong warning about the perils of reckless driving.

“This unfortunate incident highlights the dangers associated with reckless driving and disregard for road safety regulations,” Tyem stated. He called on the Federal Road Safety Corps to enhance road safety sensitization and enforcement efforts.

The chairman further urged all drivers, transporters, and commuters to prioritize safety by strictly adhering to speed limits and avoiding vehicle overloading. He reaffirmed the council’s commitment to working with relevant agencies to improve road safety across the local government.

This tragedy marks the second major road crash reported in Plateau State within a week, following a fuel tanker accident in Jos that resulted in two deaths and sixteen injuries.

The latest incident brings the total number of fatalities from road accidents in the state over the past two weeks to twenty-five.
