Fubara Unveils Modern General Hospital, Expands Mental Health Care in Rivers

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has inaugurated a newly built General Hospital and a remodelled Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Rumuigbo, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, marking a major boost to healthcare infrastructure in the state.

The governor said the transformation of the neuropsychiatric facility was prompted by concerns over its deteriorating condition and the growing need for quality mental health services. He noted that the upgraded centre now provides improved treatment and rehabilitation services for individuals dealing with mental health and substance abuse challenges.

Fubara stated that the project reflects his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and ensuring residents have access to modern medical facilities. He added that enhanced security measures have also been introduced to create a safer environment for patients and healthcare workers.

Speaking on the newly established General Hospital, the governor said the facility was designed to bridge a critical healthcare gap in Obio/Akpor, one of the state’s most populous local government areas. He explained that residents previously depended largely on primary healthcare centres or travelled to tertiary institutions for specialised treatment.

According to him, the hospital will provide comprehensive medical services closer to the people, reducing pressure on referral centres and improving access to quality care.

Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s focus on key sectors including healthcare, education and housing, stressing that investments in these areas remain essential to improving living standards across the state.

The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Dr Gift Worlu, described the projects as landmark achievements that would enhance healthcare access and address growing health needs within the community.

Also speaking at the event, President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Afam Osigwe, commended the state government for prioritising healthcare development and urged Nigerians to embrace mental health awareness while discouraging stigma against those seeking treatment.

Health authorities disclosed that the two facilities are equipped with modern diagnostic and treatment equipment, specialised wards, emergency units, rehabilitation services and ambulances to support efficient healthcare delivery.
